Data and Systems Associate
About The Outreach Team
The Outreach Team is the national engine of campaigners and organizers powering the progressive movement. With an on-the-ground presence in communities all across the country, our world-class team runs successful civic engagement campaigns on behalf of progressive organizations. These campaigns work to build a future that is fairer, cleaner, safer, and more peaceful for everyone.
About the Position
The Data and Systems team plays a critical role in helping the field teams hit their goals and win campaigns. We do this in 3 key ways: 1) Building and maintaining accurate reports on field performance that drive campaign management decisions, 2) Developing new tools and automation to make internal processes like recruitment, onboarding, and payroll more efficient at scale, and 3) Providing tech support for staff who use our systems and tools.
In the Data and Systems Associate role, you’ll help launch new campaigns by setting up all the systems and reports needed. Throughout the campaigns, you’ll work directly with the field team to understand additional needs that arise on the ground and then build out reporting or system customizations that meet those needs. You’ll also support both the field teams and other internal teams like the payroll and recruitment teams as they use our systems, by answering day-to-day user questions and moving quickly to troubleshoot user issues that come up.
Responsibilities include:
- Set up tracking systems and reporting dashboards for new campaign launches, based on existing organizational templates
- Build customizations for existing campaign dashboards as needed
- Set up templatized systems to administer onboarding and payroll processes for new campaign launches, and build customizations to these as needed
- Provision new users across our various systems and platforms
- Respond to user questions about our systems in Slack or email in a timely manner
- Troubleshoot data/systems errors that come up and fix bugs quickly
- Communicate with the field teams and other departments to understand unique operational needs that they may have, translate those needs into technical solutions, and build out those solutions
- Manage and update documentation for systems and processes
The Data and Systems Associate reports to the Data and Systems Director or Assistant Director.
Qualifications:
Must have:
- Advanced skills in Google Sheets (or Excel). You can write complex formulas from scratch (and read those that others have written), explain import ranges and index/matches, and frequently use the basics of data validation, sheet protection mechanisms, and conditional formatting.
- Tech savvy. You don’t need to be an expert in every system or tech language we use, but you should be able to learn new systems/platforms quickly and follow detailed technical instructions.
- Systems thinker. You can envision the underlying structure of complex interconnected systems, and anticipate downstream effects of changes to any one system on the others.
- Extremely detail-oriented. You care about getting the little things right, and you catch small mistakes that others don’t notice.
- Customer service oriented. You have an understanding and helpful attitude when helping people troubleshoot tech/systems issues, as well as the skillset to effectively diagnose the root cause of the person’s issue.
- Highly flexible / adaptable. When priorities change multiple times throughout a campaign, you have no problem adjusting your plan to roll with the punches.
- Willingness to work evenings and weekends when necessary. This ebbs and flows with the campaign schedule, but some regular flexibility outside of traditional office hours is required.
- Effective remote worker. You can manage your own workload and hit tight deadlines without in-person supervision.
Nice to have:
- At least 1-2 years of experience in face-to-face field operations (voter contact, voter registration, organizing, ballot initiatives, fundraising, etc)
- Experience with using Google Apps Script to customize Google Workspace functionality
- Proficiency in SQL and/or experience with Google’s BigQuery
- Experience with data visualization and/or reporting dashboard design
- Experience with or fluency in at least one technical language
- Experience in customer service for data or tech
